It's true! Having a video on your webpage can dramatically improve your site's Google search ranking.
Let's just repeat that. Having a video on your webpage can dramatically improve your site's Google search ranking. According to Forrester Research (a technolgy and market research company), online videos are 53 times more likely to get a first page Google ranking than conventionally-optimized websites. 53 times!
There are several Google-related reasons for this. Firstly, by displaying video in its search results, Google meets its oobjective of presenting mixed-media search results for a given term (which, in addition to video, includes Local Listings, pictures, Twitter and LinkedIn feeds - did we mention we also make video for LinkedIn?). Another reason for the huge leg up the rankings with video is that there isn't vast amount of video out there at the moment (although there's an avalanch coming), and what there is isn't properly indexed.

In addition, Google owns YouTube, and so has a vested interest in promoting videos that appear on the site. What's more, YouTube is now introducing a system of converting speech into text. That means that anything you say in a video can be translated into text, which can be indexed by Google. That's pretty huge, and is going to redefine the entire search engine experience. Right now, YouTube's translation service is only at the beta stage, but its going to be launching properly really soon.
